NAEP Technical DocumentationWriting Assessment Subscale Composition for New and Previously Administered Blocks at Grade 8: 2002

The NAEP writing assessment is based on a framework that specifies a single scale. In 2002, the writing assessment included both new writing prompts and prompts that had been administered in previous writing assessments. Writing prompts can be seen as both "items" and "blocks," because there is only one item per block, and each item contains only one writing prompt followed by ruled pages for the student's response.

Because this type of table is supplied for all subject areas on this website, the table format has been maintained for writing to clarify which treatments are possible and which are not. For the new items and for the items administered in a previous writing assessment, the number of polytomously scored constructed-response items is provided. This item count is defined in the final Item Response Theory (IRT) scales.

Scale composition by item type for new blocks as defined after scaling, grade 8 writing combined national and state main assessment: 2002
Scale Multiple-choice items Dichotomously scored constructed-response items Polytomously scored constructed-response items
Scaled Dropped Scaled Dropped Polytomous (uncollapsed) Dichotomous collapsed Polytomous collapsed Dropped
Total 3 0 0
Writing scale 3 0 0
† Not applicable; category does not apply to the writing assessment. A block in the writing assessment consists of a single item, which is a writing prompt that is followed by lined pages for the student to write an extended constructed response.
NOTE: "Dropped" denotes items that were deleted from the final scaling. "Collapsed" denotes items that had categories that were combined and recoded for scaling.

NOTE: "Concurrent" denotes items that were scaled as common items across assessment years. "Split" denotes items that were scaled as different items in each assessment year. "Dropped" denotes items that were deleted from the final scaling. "Collapsed" denotes items that had categories that were combined and recoded for scaling.
