NAEP collects information about school characteristics, curricula, and teacher instructional practices from the principals and teachers of sampled students. This information is used to contextualize student
achievement results in NAEP reports. In addition, the teacher or school staff member most knowledgeable about each sampled
student with a disability (SD) and
English learner (EL) provides information that is used by the
School Coordinator to decide which students can be assessed in
general sessions with or without
accommodations, assessed in a separate accommodations session, or cannot be assessed at all.
Online SD and EL questionnaires are provided to teachers and school staff members prior to the preassessment contacts by field staff. Ideally, all SD and EL questionnaires are completed online during this period. Online school and teacher questionnaires are provided during the preassessment period for completion by assessment day. If sampled students are newly identified as SD and/or EL during the preassessment period, online questionnaires for those students are provided to the appropriate school personnel. Since 2001, the school and teacher questionnaires have been available online for school staff; however, hardcopy questionnaires are available upon request.
