Students are selected to participate in NAEP by one of two sampling procedures, the selection of which is determined by a school's method of student list submission. For schools whose list of eligible students was submitted using the e-file system, NAEP selects student samples centrally using an electronic sampling procedure. For schools choosing to provide hard-copy student lists, student samples are drawn in the field by NAEP field staff during the preassessment period.
