NAEP Technical DocumentationStudent Booklets for the 2002 Writing Assessment

The instruments used in the NAEP writing assessment are composed of writing prompts from previous NAEP assessments, as well as newly developed prompts for the current assessment. Administering the same blocks (i.e., prompts, in the case of the writing assessment) across years allows for the reporting of trends in writing performance. At the same time, developing blocks makes it possible to release some for public use. In some assessment years, one or more blocks at each grade are released to the public.

Test developers chose 51 blocks (writing prompts) from the 1998 assessment—17 at each grade—to use in the 2002 assessment. Time allotted per block was 25 minutes. In addition, they created three new blocks at each grade and released three blocks (prompts) to the public. These released blocks can be accessed via the NAEP Questions Tool.

The tables below display the NAEP 2002 writing assessment student booklet configurations for grade 4, grade 8, and grade 12.
