For the 2009 assessment, test developers maintained 19 comprehension blocks and eight vocabulary half-blocks from the blocks administered in the 2008 field test. In addition, they created nine new comprehension blocks and two vocabulary half-blocks at grade 12. Four blocks—two from grade 4 and two from grade 8—were released from the NAEP 2009 reading assessment and are available to the public via the NAEP Questions Tool. Released blocks of questions are not used in later assessments.
