Technical Documentation for all NAEP assessments since 2000 is available here in HTML format in lieu of a printed technical report. This documentation details item and instrument development, sample design and weighting, data collection, scoring, and data analysis for the assessments. |
The NAEP 1999 Long-Term Trend Technical Analysis Report The report details sample design, data collection, and data analysis procedures for the NAEP 1999 long-term trend assessment in the subject areas of mathematics, reading, and science. Although writing was assessed as part of the long-term trend assessment in 1999, the results were not reported and the analysis is not documented in this report (Allen, Hombo, and Stoeckel 2003). |
The NAEP 1998 Technical Report This report provides details on the instrument development, sample design, data collection, and data analysis procedures for the 1998 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in the subject areas of reading, writing, and civics. Nearly 448,000 public- and nonpublic-school students across the United States were assessed at the national (grades 4, 8, and 12) and state (grades 4 and 8) levels(Allen, Donoghue, and Schoeps 2001). |
The NAEP 1997 Arts Technical Analysis Report The report details sample design, data collection, and data analysis procedures for the NAEP 1997 arts assessment administered in grade 8 (Allen, Jenkins, and Schoeps 2004). |
The NAEP 1996 Technical Report The 1996 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) monitored the performance of students in the subject areas of reading, mathematics, science, and writing. About 124,000 students were in the national sample for this assessment. The students were 9, 13, or 17 years old or in grades 4, 8, or 12. This technical report provides details on the instrument development, sample design, data collection, and data analysis procedures for the 1996 assessment. The reader is cautioned that results from the 1996 long-term trend assessment in writing have not been reported. The Internet edition of "The NAEP 1996 Technical Report" incorporates all changes listed on the errata sheet distributed with the print edition. |
The NAEP 1996 State Science Assessment Technical Report The NAEP 1996 State Assessment in science, in which 47 jurisdictions participated, measured what eighth-grade students know and can do in science. This report provides technical information about the assessment. It provides a description of the assessment design and gives an overview of the steps involved in the implementation of the program from the planning stages through to the analysis and reporting of the data. It does not provide results, but rather detailed information on the development of the cognitive and background questions, the field procedures, the creation of the database and data products for analysis, and the methods and procedures used for sampling, analysis, and reporting. |
The NAEP 1996 State Mathematics Assessment Technical Report The purpose of this report is to provide technical information about the 1996 State Assessment in mathematics. It provides a description of the design for the State Assessment and gives an overview of the steps involved in the implementation of the program from the planning stages through to the analysis and reporting of the data. The report describes in detail the development of the cognitive and background questions, the field procedures, the creation of the database and data products for analysis, and the methods and procedures used for sampling, analysis, and reporting. It does not provide the results of the assessment—rather, it provides information on how those results were derived. |
The NAEP 1994 Technical Report This report provides details on the instrument development, sample design, data collection, and data analysis procedures of the 1994 national assessment. |
Technical Report of the NAEP 1994 Trial State Assessment in Reading This report documents the methodology used to conduct the state NAEP assessment in reading in 1994. |
The 1992 NAEP Technical Report for the National Assessment This report provides details on the instrument development, sample design, data collection, and data analysis procedures of the 1992 national assessment. |
Technical Report of the NAEP 1992 Trial State Assessment Program in Reading This report describes the technical issues involved in the data collection and reporting of the 1992 NAEP state assessment in reading. |
Technical Report of the NAEP 1990 Trial State Assessment Program This report documents the procedures used in the 1990 NAEP Trial State Assessment. |
