Since the introduction of electronic submission of teacher and school questionnaire data in 2001, NAEP data collection staff now receive files containing student demographic data from those schools that can and are interested in submitting the data electronically. For schools that do not have the computer hardware and connectivity to submit information electronically, some NAEP field supervisors key the information into their laptop computers. Data captured prior to mid-November of the current assessment cycle is then sent to NAEP materials-processing staff through file transfers. Receiving these electronic files allows materials-processing staff to preprint not only the student booklet IDs but also any demographic data on the administration schedules. Preprinting the demographic data on the administration schedules reduces burden on field supervisors, saving them time that would otherwise be needed to complete the form by hand. Preprinting of demographic data on the administration schedules is also advantageous to the materials-processing staff. Having the information preprinted saves time during the online editing process, and the overall data quality is improved, since preprinted data is typically not displayed to processing staff for verification during assessment processing.
For the 2001 assessment, approximately one-third of the original set of cooperating schools submitted demographic data to data collection staff electronically.
