Data are sent to the scoring center through secure, dedicated T1 transmission lines linking the mainframe computers and the NAEP servers at the document scanning site in the primary scoring facility in Iowa City, Iowa with the scoring servers dedicated to distributing work to the professional raters (i.e., scorers) at the scoring center. Data are typically transmitted during off-shift hours to minimize the impact on system-load capacity.
