For the NAEP 2017 assessment, 348 scannable booklets, 14 nonscannable large-print booklets, and four Braille booklets were designed for the paper based assessment. The materials distribution staff also printed the student login cards for the digitally based assessment.
In addition, 14 scannable paper questionnaires were designed, to be used for either paper based or digitally based assessments:
- four school questionnaires (operational and pilot at grades 4 and 8)
- four teacher questionnaires (operational and pilot at grades 4 and 8)
- two Computer Access and Familiarity Study (CAFS) questionnaires (student questionnaires at grades 4 and 8)
- two school questionnaires for use in Puerto Rico (operational at grades 4 and 8)

Over 45 million pages were printed, including approximately 877,000 paper based student booklets, 113,000 questionnaires, and 1.2 million student login cards.
