The NAEP materials distribution processing technology staff provides a detailed frequency distribution (FD) file to the NAEP design analysis contractor with the final data file. This FD file indicates the total number of responses for each item for paper-based and digitally based assessments. For most machine-scored items, the FD file indicates the number of students who answered with each possible response. For open-ended constructed-response items, the FD file indicates the number of students who received each score point. The FD does not include data for short-answer machine-scored items.

The data analysis contractor compares the FD file from their database to those provided by the materials distribution technology staff to verify the data received matches. If there is a discrepancy, the situation is researched and resolved.
