NAEP Technical Documentation State NAEP 2002 Replicate Student Nonresponse Adjustments

Student nonresponse adjustments and replicate student nonresponse adjustments were computed for the State NAEP 2002 weights. The former is discussed in Computation of Student Nonresponse Adjustments. The replicate student nonresponse adjustments were computed as follows for each nonresponse weighting cell d:

STNRADJ subscript d left parenthesis r right parenthesis equals the summation over s k within the set S subscript d of STUWGT subscript s k left parenthesis r right parenthesis divided by the summation over s k within the set R subscript d of STUWGT subscript s k left parenthesis r right parenthesis

where

  • Sd are the sampled students within student nonresponse cell d;
  • Rd are the assessed students within student nonresponse cell d; and
  • STUWGTsk(r) is the student base weight for school s, student k, and replicate r.

Estimates and standard errors were calculated using both these weights and replicate weights, for each participating jurisdiction, as well as comparisons to the corresponding totals for the full student sample. As can be seen in Weighted Enrollment Checks from the State NAEP 2002 Responding Student Samples, the student nonresponse adjustments have the effect of allowing the responding students to represent the full set of students. The replicate adjustments are designed to produce variance estimates that reflect the component of variability added by the nonresponse adjustment process.
