NAEP Technical DocumentationDevelopment of Initial School Nonresponse Cells for the 2008 LTT Assessment

The cells for nonresponse adjustments are generally functions of the school sampling strata for each individual sample age (9, 13, 17). Sampling strata definitions differ for public and private schools.

Public Schools

For public schools, initial weighting cells were formed within each age using the following nesting cell structure:

  • census region;
  • urbanicity (defined by locale variable ) stratum; and
  • race/ethnicity classification.

Private Schools

For private schools, initial weighting cells were formed within each age using the following nesting cell structure:

  • census region;
  • affiliation (Catholic or non-Catholic); and
  • race/ethnicity classification.
