National Indian Education StudyNIES Survey Questionnaires

In addition to completing the NAEP mathematics and reading assessments, students, teachers, and school principals participating in the National Indian Education Study (NIES) were asked to complete survey questionnaires. Because these questionnaires are specific to the NIES and focus on American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) education, they differ from the NAEP questionnaires.

All of the survey questions were multiple choice, but a space was provided at the end of the survey for respondents to write in comments. The student survey took about 10–15 minutes to complete; the teacher and principal surveys took about 20–25 minutes to complete.

Throughout the questionnaires, the role of AI/AN culture in students' lives and school experiences is explored. The teacher questionnaire collects information about teachers' backgrounds and instructional practices as they relate to the education of AI/AN students. Teachers who teach reading and/or mathematics to one or more students selected for the study are asked to complete this questionnaire. The school administrator questionnaire collects information about school factors related to the education of AI/AN students. The questionnaire is completed by the principal or head administrator of the school whose AI/AN students are selected for the study.
