NAEP Technical DocumentationDerived Variables for the Geography Assessment in 2001

Geography Courses Taken: Grade 8

Three questions (G801601, G801602, G801603) in the grade 8 geography background questionnaire section asked students to indicate if they had taken or expected to take a geography course in 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade. The resulting derived variable (COURSG2) was determined by the sum of "yes" responses to these questions.

  • 2 = One year: Indicated "yes" to taking one geography course.

  • 3 = Two years: Indicated "yes" to taking two geography courses.

  • 4 = Three years: Indicated "yes" to taking three geography courses.
