U.S. History Courses Taken: Grade 8

Three questions (H80331, H803302, H803401) in the grade 8 U.S. history background questionnaire section asked students to indicate if they had taken or expect to take a U.S. history course in 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade. The resulting derived variable (COURSH2) was determined by the sum of "yes" responses to these questions.

  • 1 = None: Did not indicate taking any U.S. history courses.
  • 2 = One year: Indicated "yes" to taking one U.S. history course.
  • 3 = Two years: Indicated "yes" to taking two U.S. history courses.
  • 4 = Three years: Indicated "yes" to taking three U.S. history courses.

U.S. History Courses Taken: Grade 12

Four questions (H803303, H803304, H083305, H803401) in the grade 12 U.S. history course background questionnaire section asked students to indicate if they had taken or expect to take a U.S. history course in 9th grade, 10th grade, 11th grade, and 12th grade. The resulting derived variable (COURSH3) was determined by the sum of "yes" responses to these questions.

  • 1 = None: Did not indicate taking any U.S. history courses.
  • 2 = One year: Indicated "yes" to taking one U.S. history course.
  • 3 = Two years: Indicated "yes" to taking two U.S. history courses.
  • 4 = Three years: Indicated "yes" to taking three U.S. history courses.
  • 5 = Four years: Indicated "yes" to taking four U.S. history courses.
