Processing Student Booklets and Questionnaires

In each assessment cycle, the NAEP materials-processing contractor is responsible for the following tasks related to the printing, packaging, distribution, receiving, processing, and delivery of data files for the paper-based (PBA) and digitally based (DBA) NAEP assessment:

printing assessment booklets for PBA and school and teacher questionnaires;
packaging and distributing assessment booklets, subject ancillaries (e.g., rulers and calculators) used by the students taking PBA, and accommodation ancillaries (e.g., calculator shortcut keys and keyboard navigation reference sheet) used in DBA, to the sampling design assessment administrators;
receipt control of paper-based booklets and digitally based files;
data capture through image and optical mark recognition scanning of the paper-based documents;
data editing and validation;
quality control;
upload of open-ended responses into NAEP's electronic scoring system, including scanned images from paper booklets, and text and image files from digitally based items;
creation of scoring training sets for new items;
training and performance scoring of constructed response items;
data file creation; and
inventory control and materials storage.
