The data entry process is the first point at which booklet-level data are directly available to the computer system. Depending on the NAEP document, one of three methods was used to transcribe NAEP data to a computerized form: optical mark reflex (OMR) scanning, image scanning, and intelligent character recognition (ICR). The data on scannable documents are collected using optical-scanning equipment that can capture not only OMR data but also images of the constructed-response items and ICR fields in a single scan pass.
