NAEP Technical DocumentationLong-Term Trend Targeted Number of Students by Age

The school measures of size for each of the long-term trend school samples were set to be proportional to the number of estimated age-eligible students, divided by the PSU probability of selection. The overall sample sizes were driven by the targeted number of students for each assessment session. These targets are presented in this section. The 2004 long-term trend sessions consisted of:

  • 'B' session: new mathematics, new reading, mathematics pilot, and reading pilot,
  • 'C', 'D' sessions: mathematics bridge (two different components), and
  • 'F' session: reading bridge.

The 'new' sessions use the newly developed instruments for 2004 (the 'main' study). The target numbers of assessments for each session for the age 9 sample, the age 13 sample, and the age 17 sample are given in the following tables.

School measure of size targets for 9-year-old students, long-term trend assessment: By type of school and session, 2004

These targets represent completed assessments. To get the overall sample sizes, these targets were adjusted upwards to allow for losses from absent, refusing, and/or ineligible schools and students (so that the completed assessment targets would be as desired). The expected student response rates were set to be the realized weighted student response rates for the NAEP 2001 geography and U.S. history assessments, as this was the most recent experience. The average of the NAEP 2001 history exclusion rate and geography exclusion rate was used as the exclusion rate, from the 'R3' reporting population (i.e., including only students under the new accommodations system). The tables below present overall revised targets by school type for 9-, 13-, and 17-year-olds respectively.
