For the science hands-on tasks (HOT) and interactive computer tests (ICT) assessments, the target student sample sizes within sampled schools varied by grade. All fourth-grade students in the school were sampled if the school had 54 or fewer students in that grade. For schools with more than 54 fourth-grade students, a sample of 54 students was selected without replacement. For eighth and twelfth grades, all students were sampled if the school had 52 or fewer students in that grade. Otherwise, a sample of 52 students was selected without replacement.

Three types of assessment sessions were conducted in the schools selected for the HOT/ICT samples: science hands-on tasks (HOT), science interactive computer testing (ICT), and a pilot test. Student sampling for the NAEP 2009 national science probe samples was designed to achieve proportions shown in the table below for each study type (HOT, ICT, and pilot), which would provide the targets needed for each assessment overall.

The table also presents the target sample sizes for students in schools for each study type and grade. As specified above, all grade-eligible students in schools were taken if the school's grade-eligible student count was less than or equal to the target value, and samples equal to the target were taken for schools with grade-eligible student counts greater than the target value.

The process of list submission, sampling new enrollees, and determining student eligibility and exclusion status was the same as the process used for the NAEP 2009 state student samples.
