The twelfth-grade public school sample was designed to achieve a nationally representative sample of twelfth-grade students enrolled in public schools in the United States. The students in the twelfth-grade public school sample were assessed in mathematics, reading, science, and vocabulary.
The target sample size for the twelfth-grade public school sample was 39,600 assessed students. Prior to sampling, the target sample size was adjusted upward to offset expected school and student attrition due to nonresponse and ineligibility.
The twelfth-grade public school sample was based on a two-stage design that involved selection of schools within strata and selection of students within schools. The first-stage sample of schools was selected with probability proportional to a measure of size based on estimated grade 12 student enrollment in the schools.
