NAEP Technical DocumentationComputation of Replicate Base Weights for Sampled Students in Certainty Schools

Within each doublet preliminary stratum, the first student was assigned as the first variance unit and the second student as the second variance unit. Within each triplet preliminary stratum, the three students were assigned variance units 1 through 3. Given Rr as the students within the r-th replicate stratum, and Uk as the variance unit (1 or 2), the replicate factors wk(r), r = 1,...,R, are computed as follows:

w subscript k left parenthesis r right parenthesis equals open left bracket 2 if k is in the set of R subscript r and U subscript k equals 1 or 0 if k is in the set of R subscript r and U subscript k equals 2 or 1 if k is not in the set of R subscript r

For triplets, each triplet replicate stratum Rr is assigned a paired replicate stratum r2. The replicate weights for students in Rr are:

w subscript k left parenthesis r right parenthesis equals open left bracket 1.5 if k is in the set R subscript r and U subscript k equals 1 or 1.5 if k is in the set R subscript r and U subscript k equals 2 or 0 if k is in the set R subscript r and U subscript k equals 3 or 1 if k is not in the set R subscript r

w subscript k left parenthesis r subscript 2 right parenthesis equals open left bracket 1.5 if k is in the set R subscript r and U subscript k equals 1 or 0 if k is in the set R subscript r and U subscript k equals 2 or 1.5 if k is in the set R subscript r and U subscript k equals 3 or 1 if k is not in the set R subscript r
