Arts Tasks in This Report

1997 Arts Assessment Strategies ReportExercise Six From The Stolen Moon Task

In the next exercise, and the two that follow, students were required to analyze and interpret more extensively than in the previous exercises. They were asked to demonstrate their abilities to make choices about costuming, actions, and vocal qualities that would communicate appropriate information about character to an audience.

Imagine what kinds of costumes the actors playing Fox, Raven, and Bear would wear in this scene. Circle an item on the list below that you think would make a good costume for the actor playing Fox, Raven, OR Bear.

Costume Items
bathrobe
overalls
swimming suit
fancy clothes
uniform
sweat suit
winter coat

Which character would wear the costume item you chose?

Now explain why you would use the item you chose for that character's costume.

Scoring Guide

A costume can have as great an impact on audience response to a character as can an actor's performance. This question was designed to measure students' abilities to make design choices that communicate information about character to an audience.

3 - ACCEPTABLE The student chooses an item for a character and gives a plausible explanation for why that item would be a good costume for the character. [Sample Response]

2 - PARTIAL The student chooses an item for a character without explaining why that item would be a good costume for the character. [Sample Response]

1 - UNACCEPTABLE The student chooses a relevant character OR an item, or neither, or makes irrelevant choices unrelated to the scene. [Sample Response]
