1997 Arts Assessment Strategies ReportExercise Seven From The Stolen Moon TaskPretend you are playing the part of Bear in this scene. Explain what you think Bear feels as he listens to Raven tell Squirrel's story about Ant. Now go to page 3 of this section and find the line in the scene that is marked with the * sign. Imagine acting this line. Describe what you would do with your voice to show Bear's feelings about Squirrel's story. Scoring Guide This question is designed to measure students' abilities to assume the emotional life of a character in a particular situation. The story that Raven tells to Bear is repetitive and never comes to the point. Bear appears upset and bored by this. To convey how Bear feels in the starred line, the student must identify a specific action such as yawning, or vocal quality, such as speaking slowly and softly as if drifting off to sleep. It should not be a simple reiteration of the desired feeling that Bear should show, for example "He should say it in a bored way." 3 - ACCEPTABLE The student explains what feeling Bear might have while listening to the story (disappointment, sleepiness, anger, boredom, frustration, etc.) AND appropriately describes how the starred line should be delivered. [Sample Response] 2 - PARTIAL The student identifies an appropriate feeling for Bear OR appropriately describes how the starred line should be delivered. [Sample Response] 1 - UNACCEPTABLE The student does not identify an appropriate feeling or describe how the line should be delivered. [Sample Response] |
