NAEP Technical DocumentationImage Scanning

The images of constructed-response items are saved as a digitized computer file. The area of the page that needs to be clipped is defined prior to scanning through the document definition process. The fields from unreadable pages are coded "X" as a flag for resolution staff to correct. Any image document or sheet unreadable by the image scanning system is taken to a flatbed scanner to be scanned into the system. In addition to capturing the student responses, the bar code identification numbers used to maintain process control are decoded and transcribed to the NAEP computerized data file.
