Exercise Four From the Sleeping Beauty Task Students were required to make more extensive comparisons among the dances in the next exercise and in exercises five and six than in the first set of exercises. More written responses were expected. As indicated in the directions shown below, before responding to the exercises, students were given another opportunity to view the dances. You will see Dances 1, 2, and 3 one more time. Before you see them, read questions 6 through 10, but do not write your answers yet. Now watch Dances 1, 2, and 3 one more time. Students are then asked to consider stylistic and compositional elements of the different dance styles. How do the costumes worn by the women in the three dances contribute to and emphasize the movements of the dances? Scoring Guide This question assesses whether students can identify how one element of dance composition (costuming) affects other elements of composition (movement and choreography). 4 - EXTENSIVE The student appropriately relates the costumes to the movements of the three dances (movement qualities and/or choreography). [Sample Response] 3 - ESSENTIAL The student appropriately relates the costumes to the movements of two dances (movement qualities and/or choreography). [Sample Response] 2 - PARTIAL The response appropriately relates the costumes to the movements of one dance (movement qualities and/or choreography). [Sample Response] 1 - UNACCEPTABLE The response does not relate the costumes to any dance's movement qualities or choreography. Addendum to the Scoring Guide Dance 1
