Describe the relationship between the amount of floor space used and the movements the dancers make in Dances 2 and 3. Be specific about the kinds of movements the dancers make.

Scoring Guide

This question is designed to assess whether students can identify compositional elements of dance (in this case, use of space) in specific dance styles, and describe the relationship between the use of space and the movement qualities of the dancers.

4 - EXTENSIVE The student specifically describes the relationship between the use of floor space and movement/movement quality in both dances. [Sample Response]

3 - ESSENTIAL The student specifically describes the relationship between the use of floor space and movement/movement quality in one of the two dances. [Sample Response]

2 - PARTIAL The student describes the use of the floor space OR the movement/movement quality in one or both of the two dances but does not describe the relationship between the two. [Sample Response]

1 - UNACCEPTABLE The student does not describe the use of the floor space, the movement/movement quality, or any relationships between space and movement for either dance.

Addendum to the Scoring Guide
Responses receiving credit could include:

Dance 2 (Flamenco):

  • Small steps, little space, limited space, small space, concise, not a lot of space, small movements
  • The body is usually erect, with small foot movements
  • Foot movements are controlled, generally directed at floor; foot remains in contact with the floor
  • Stomping movements, tapping movements

Dance 3 (Ballroom):

  • Uses a lot of floor space
  • Movements are usually swirling circles within larger circles covering the perimeter of the floor
  • Large steps, travelling steps, wide/sweeping/large/big movements
  • Waltzing
  • Fluid, flowing, gliding
  • Like ice skating
  • Spinning around
